The Academy was founded as the Korean Academy of Dental Perio by Moon dong sun, Kim nak-hui, Kang joon-sun, Lee jae-hyun, and Chang hung-soo on October 7th, 1960 at the lecture hall 3 of College of Dentistry, Seoul National University. At the inaugural meeting Kim nak-hui was elected as president, and Chang hung-soo and Lee jae-hyun were elected as vice-presidents.
The name was changed to Korea Academy of Periodontology at the board meeting on Jan 17th, 1973. Seoul branch and Kyung-buk branch were established in November, 1966 and in May, 1984, respectively.

Ever since its foundation, the academy has tired to enrich its members by offering academic symposiums, clinical training, and special lectures of internationally prominent scholars.
The annual academic meetings have been held since 1972, and on October 27th and 28th, the academic meeting celebrating the 20th anniversary of the foundation of the academy was held in grand style at Seoul National Hospital, arousing deep interest from the academic circles.

  Journal of Korea Academy of Periodontology has been published annually since its first issue on October 25th, 1971. In 1976, a committee was set up to establish terms used in eriodontology. The Glossary of Terms of Periodontology and The Almanac of Academic Articles of Periodontology was published on October 25th, 1980, thereby contributing to the advancement of the field.
Currently the office is set up at the second floor of Korean Dentist Hall, and academic meetings for the specialists are held annually. In addition, academic symposiums are held three times a year and the Journal of Korea Academy of Periodontology is published four times a year.
On October 7th, 1994 sisterhood relationship was established with the Japanese Academy of Periodontology. Through exchange visits every other year, academic cooperation and mutual friendship is promoted.Having started with only 36 members when it was first founded, the Academy currently has 1000 members (as of year 2000). To assist the works of the president
and the vice-president, there are a general director, an academic director, a financial director, an editing director, a press director, a public relation director, an international director, and an insurance director.
